About Our Name & Logo
In 2002, isisHawaii was created to address a need for girls to connect with mentors for educational and career guidance by providing an online mentoring resource. The name “isis” combined two key organizational elements — the italicized “i” stood for “Internet” and “sis” for “sister.”
Since then, isisHawaii has evolved and broadened its scope of services. Today, any student — regardless of race, ethnicity or gender — is welcomed to participate in a wide range of isisHawaii programs and opportunities focused on fostering interest in STEM (i.e., science, technology, engineering and mathematics) higher education and career exploration.
Diversity is still one of isisHawaii’s core values and will remain an organizational priority.
The Icon:This graphical representation still reflects the original premise of another isisHawaii core value — mentorship. Four squares surround a “plus” symbol which represents directional forces that will move an individual forward to achieve desired goals — a mentor, for instruction, guidance and encouragement (top); someone to mentor (i.e., a mentee or protege) to pass on knowledge gained (below); and a support network that provides positive reinforcement (left and right). |
